COSTO RICO is a young and extremely talented band, and over the last few years played their way from an insider tip of the Barcelona Mestizo Scene into the next higher league and into the hearts of a widespread audience. Great international festival performances all over Europe leave no doubt about that.
After some single tracks on compilations, e.g. Barcelona Zona Bastarda and Manu Chao’s La Colifata, COSTO RICO first appeared on the international clubscene with their debut album „El Patio“. Barcelona legend Martin Fuks worked as producer, and the list of artists that supported COSTO RICO while recording and appear as guestmusicians on the album seems to come right out of a musicians cockagne: Yacine Belahcene Benet (Singer of Cheb Balowski), Lisandro Montés (Alcohol Fino), Serge (Go-Lem System) and Sandro Lustoca, Beto Bedoya und Wicho Rodriguez (ex-Macaco, now playing with Bar Xino.)
After playing shows and festivals all over Europe to promote El Patio, the band spent most of its time and energy in producing their critically acclaimed album “Cosas Ricas”, that definitely strengthened their position. And even if the „Mestizo Wave“ finally breaks, as predicted so many times that nobody quite believes it anymore, COSTO RICO will survive, because of their very own style of mixing Salsa, Rumba and Caribbean influences with sweet Reggae and impelling Ragga sounds, and of course because of their seducing and intoxicating live performance, satisfying both eyes and ears of the audience (and hips as well…!) Anyone who doubts this should listen to their last released album Amanece!
Live on stage, COSTO RICO are full of energy! Orchestrated with two percussionists, two guitars, a trumpet and a sax amongst others, combined with the wonderful voice of lead singer Meri, they create songs of pure beauty, deeply rooted in Catalan tradition as well as modern sounds and always very attentive to melodies, which instantly conquer your heart.
