Krystyna Prońko, Michał Wiśniewski, Hanna Śleszyńska, Piotr Gąsowski, and Robert Rozmus are just some of the famous names with whom Magdalena Czwojda has been performing concerts for years. As the only female guitarist in Poland who plays both the acoustic and electric guitars with such a diverse repertoire, Magda has decided to present the world her first solo, fully original album „Depending on…” The album coincides with the jubilee of the 20th anniversary of her artistic work.
When the famous jazz trumpeter Zbigniew Czwojda sent his 4-year- old daughter to piano classes, he did not suspect that she would become a champion of an instrument mainly associated with men. An ambitious, talented and beautiful girl proved that a guitar in her hands could cause great emotions. In the early years of her education as a classical guitarist and then as a student of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice, she won numerous awards and scholarships. In 2006, she graduated with a Master of Arts degree from that university as the first female guitarist in the history of the department!
Magda very quickly started working as a professional musician in her father’s band. Along with him, she has performed on many stages around the world, as well as recorded an album titled, „Still Swinging.” Later she recorded a TV shows with Elita Cabaret. Then the other proposals came from many television programs such as „Śpiewające Fortepiany”, „Singa Dinga” and the „Szymon Majewski Show” to name a few.
Magda leads a very active musical life. She is the founder and leader of the band Nomen; (previously named; „Bikini”) which in 2007, with the song she composed, „Don’t Judge Me”, found itself in the top ten of a national selection for Eurovision Song Contest. In 2009 the group released its debut album, „Omen.”. Magda permanently cooperates with the band; Tercet czyli Kwartet; and the CAPITOL Music Theater in Wroclaw. She is a part of a jazz duet with bassist Tomasz Grabowy, as well as a family group; Past & Future. On her account she has also a released album of a group Soundz Good, with her own music co-written with Marta Zalewska. To add to this, she also teaches at the Wrocław School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and at the Guitar Masters Camp in Krzyżowa.
The album, „Depending on…” is an absolutely new, feminine vision of the guitar. Where did the title comes? Depending on the mood, situation or needs, Magda reaches for an electric or acoustic guitar. In the recorded tracks you may hear a lot of different musical inspirations, all of the album’s tracks, though quite different from each other, form a coherent whole. Part of the compositions has a jazz-rock character, played on the electric guitar with a strong rhythm section, improvisation elements and heavy rock sounds, while others have an acoustic tone with elements of classical technique, atmospheric ballads, but also with very charismatic elements of Spanish music, as` well as a classic jazz.
The artist is not afraid of courageous connections and opposites, because they are not mutually exclusive. The concept of the album is closely linked to the ancient Yin-Yang philosophy, says Magda – „Ying and Yang are not merely opposing forces, but, for me, they are also complementary of one another – similar to those forces that shaped my music”.
„Depending on…” is also an innovative approach to music creation. The guitarist created parts of her compositions to drum tracks previously recorded for other songs. This technique, called a „mash up”, is often used by DJs. Magda also decided to add to the album „pre-tracks” to submerse the listener even more into her musical journey.
Magda Czwojda appears on the album as a composer and producer, playing electric, acoustic and bass guitar, as well as keyboards, and vocals. Her brother, Michał Czwojda, whom she also invited to enrich her acoustic works, recorded the drum parts that were mentioned above. In one of the ballads you can hear the trumpet, which was recorded by Magda’s father, Zbigniew Czwojda. In another acoustic piece on the fretless bass guitar, his sounds agreed to register Tomasz Grabowy. The whole album was mixed and mastered by Paweł Zając. The publisher of the album is Wrocław’s Luna.
